August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. Stayed at Hotel Frederick three nights to have two days in town to take care of bike maintenance and city errands before continuing our cross-country expedition. Great service at hotel, bike shop, CopiesEtc, The Palace restaurant (Greek food), Maggie's Bar & Grill (burgers), and Post Office. Hotel Frederick nor Casino Hotel have on-site guest laundry, so be prepared for a pedal out to the interstate to use the laundromat. Wal-Mart and local grocery are between the river and I-70. Chain hotels are options at I-70, but then it's a pedal back to the bike shop & trail. Better to support the local economy in town when possible. Great small town hospitality with all the conveniences we needed.

Camped there about 8/7/18. It's about a half mile off the trail at the end of a gravel road. No trees or shade. A car drove in at night and stayed an hour but no one got out of the car. If you have time before dark, you might be able to find a more secluded spot nearby. I stopped there going west and won't stop going back east.

August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. Camped at the primitive Noren Access boat ramp sites. Be forewarned there is no potable water at the campsite area - get your water at the picnic pavilion on your way from the Katy. Pit toilets at the boat ramp were not clean and there are no doors - just a 90-degree turn from entrance doorway to toilet. Lots of foot traffic at the boat ramp and down the trail to the campsites. We stayed in the "red" site closest to the boat ramp and saw several young/mid-age men walking farther down the trail toward the "blue" and "white" sites. All that walked in also walked out before dark. Very noisy with bridge traffic, cicadas, and air traffic (helicopters). Campsite area was surprisingly clean, but we did have to remove a tick before he latched on. The campsite was what we needed when we needed it, but would not necessarily recommend for a lone cyclist.

August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. Thank you for the Powerade vending machine outside the cyclist hostel. Restaurant beside the hostel had a sign stating "closed until further notice". Hostel was empty mid-day, but downstairs appeared to be as clean as any college dormitory. We did not go upstairs.

August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. We stayed at Steamboat Junction when a storm popped up and shortened our day. What a lovely and quiet oasis off the dusty trail. The cleanest porta-pottie and shower house on the trail - you can see the pride of ownership. Honor system frig right off the trail and easy self-serve camping registration. Owner stopped by to check on us, say hello, and give us an update on the evening's weather predictions.

August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. We got some electrolytes and ice cream at the C&R convenience store the afternoon we arrived and camped under the picnic pavilion at the Community Ball Club ($5/person donation includes hot shower). Went back to the convenience store the next morning for a breakfast sandwich and got the last two (already put away in the frig, but warmed up nicely in the microwave). Recommend you get up early to get a fresh sandwich! Friendly folks in town... even got a serendipitous tour inside the old train depot when one of the locals stopped by to take care of some business.

August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. The picnic pavilion at Frontier Park has electrical outlets to charge devices. Closest mailbox to drop off postcards to the folks back home is at the corner of Main and Jefferson Streets beside Llywelyn's Pub. If you need a grocery store, we used Midtowne Market after staying with a local host not too far off the trail and found everything we needed.

August 2018 - Just finished riding Katy from Machens to Boonville on a fully loaded tandem with extra wheel trailer without issue other than a mystery flat tire. Bicycle access to the Machens trailhead is via a dirt field access road - look to your right to see the unmarked footpath to work your way through boulders and the old Katy gate. There is no car access and no safe place to leave a car near the trail. If you are coordinating a drop-off or pick-up for this trailhead, it might be easier to call Portage Des Sioux the meeting spot (church parking lot).

We did not stay at this hotel but walked down from our bed and breakfast to eat supper. We all tried different dishes but sampled each other’s. The catfish was the best catfish ever. All the dishes were awesome. The chef is very talented with layering flavor. The hotel manager gave us a private tour of different rooms. Then we went downstairs to the bar with live music. We are planning to come back to bring the whole family. I would highly recommend for the hotel, restaurant and entertainment.

Hermann area has hundreds of B&Bs dozens of wineries scenic bluffs on the trail dining etc.
Anonymous on 08/09/2018 09:30 AM
Interesting is dependent on each individual. What is interesting to you may not be to others, so its kinda difficult to tell you what is interesting. I could care less about a prison tour in Jefferson City. No interest there at all. Maybe it is to you. I find the German culture in the Hermann area to very interesting. I have German blood in me though. You may despise anything German. Some of the best B&B's in the state are in Hermann also.
Use this site to discover those attractions that are of interest to you. You'll know them when you see em.
There are massive scenic bluffs east of Rocheport. Bluffton, west of Hermann, is aptly named.
OCtandem from OC, CA on 08/09/2018 10:17 AM
The area between Marthasville, Augusta, and Defiance has a lot of nice scenery, places to eat, places to stay, wineries, etc. Many are right on or very close to the trail (Augusta Brewing, Defiance Ridge Winery, the Tavern and Roadhouse in Defiance). It's fun to ride from one great spot to another, rather than just riding to a nice destination like Hermann. It depends on how far you want to ride.

We stayed here because of the positive comments. Jerry's B&B house is about 100 years old, as are many of the B&B's across the country. However, Jerry's smells like it's 100 years old. It could definitely stand a thorough cleaning. I was even dubious about the cleanliness of the sheets and towels. Jerry told us he likes to provide everything he can think of for his guests. He did provide everything, but everything was tainted with dirt, especially his running stream of racist remarks. I will never stay here again.
BikerBoy from Maryville, IL on 11/03/2017 03:10 PM
Wow, I can't believe I just read that. I have stayed at nearly all the B&Bs on the trail, and Jerry's is one of the best. The place is kept very clean compared to many, more modern homes. The wood floors and the staircase all appear to be original, but in very good shape. And I have never heard a negative word come from Jerry (who sounds uncannily like Paul Harvey).
CurtM from Fort Worth TX on 11/06/2017 01:00 PM
Having stayed at Jerry's B&B a few days ago on Oct 30th, Anonymous's comments are totally unfounded. Jerry was friendly, accommodating and gracious, and his home was clean and inviting. On the morning of my departure, he even caught up with his other Oct 30 guests down the trail to make sure they got the items they'd left behind. Anyone who signs a critical comment on a public forum as "Anonymous" has no merit.
Mike Hobart from Russellville KY on 11/07/2017 12:55 PM
Whoever “Anonymous” is; has really misrepresented a wonderful person and a great B&B. I stayed with Jerry last week and the place was very clean, had a comfortable bed and did NOT smell. Jerry is a retired police officer and Air Force reservist who has not only served his country but community. He loves his country, his community and his fellow man. I met him for the first time in my life last week and after staying with him and indulging in numerous conversations; I never heard him say anything that could be interpreted as racist. I’m sorry that someone has cruelly and anonymously attacked a fine human being and a great B&B. He has had hundreds if not thousands of visitors and most of them are repeat visitors. I would not hesitate to stay there again and if you give any credence to Anonymous I would suggest that you read on down further and see if you don’t find positive review after positive review.

Our stay was wonderful! The place was clean, the pie and breakfast prepared by Jerry was to die for. Jerry, as a host and person, was kind, generous, told great stories. I would recommend Jerry's B&B in a heatbeat.

Hey there! I just have to make a comment here. We have had hundreds of guests over the past few years who have typically spent the night before with Jerry in Pilot Grove. Not once has anyone ever said anything about the cleanliness of his house nor has there ever been any mention of him making racial comments. I'm sorry, anonymous, if you had a bad experience, and frankly, I'm baffled at where your perspective might be coming from. Perhaps if you weren't anonymous there might be some way for Jerry to make amends with you. Leaia Clervi
