Good evening. Has anyone traveled from downtown St. Louis to the start of the trail in Machens? A buddy and I are arriving in St. Louis on the 15th of September and heading to the trail on Monday the 17th. Any information would be greatly appreciated. How long of a trip can we expect? Thank you. Scott

The Mississippi Riverfront Greenway Trail runs about 12 miles north from Downtown St. Louis if you are starting near the Arch. Your best be then is to enjoy the longer route across the Mississippi River and utilize the nice trails in Illinois in order to get to Machens. This Illinois route is about 28 miles versus 18 miles, but the shorter Missouri route would require you to ride on major highways with small shoulders. The Illinois route takes you across the Old Chain of Rocks pedestrian/bike bridge into Illinois where you jump on the Madison County Confluence Trail. Take that trail to the northwest past Wood River and into Alton where you can cross back into Missouri using the striped bike lane on the cable-stayed Clark Bridge Hwy. 67). Once you cross back into Missouri, take rough West Alton Trail to get close to St. Charles Street. Then take St. Charles Street to 94 Hwy. to Saale Road to Dwiggins Road to 94 Hwy. to Machens Road...the idea is to use county sidestreets to stay off of 94 Hwy. as much as possible. Machens Road takes you to the Katy trailhead just across the live railroad tracks.

I would normally agree with Mark about the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. It's worth a trip by itself. However it is often closed and locked lately. I can't seem to find a good web page with the open hours.

However there's another option. Take the Riverfront Trail north and cross over the Mississippi River on the McKinley Bridge. The map below shows it.
http://www.mcttrails.org/map.aspx

One way to avoid Hwy 94 is to not cross the river in Alton. Rather stay on the trail (past the casino on the road for a little while) to Grafton. Then take the Grafton Ferry across the river. This will add more miles plus cost money. Also the Grafton Ferry should be open on the 15th and 16th, but worth checking first.

If you go to Katy Trail home page and scroll down a ways there are several route suggestions from downtown St Louis to Katy Trail.
I am not computer literate enough to post a link.
Have a good trip

The Chain of Rocks Bridge is open but the lot is locked except for special events.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 08/22/2018 04:29 PM
When I rode from the Katy Trail to Downtown St. Louis three years ago, I avoided the Machens trailhead because there is not much there along the flood plain and the trail is always much rougher for those last 5 to 10 miles to Machens. I crossed before St. Charles at the Page Avenue bridge (Rte. 364) and mapped out a nice scenic route through the best trails and road areas of the city. I pulled up my Garmin history and the distance was right about 30 miles from the Katy Trail to Downtown St. Louis. You can Google Katy Trail to Downtown St. Louis and see my 2015 route or I can even post my Garmin link if you want.

Hello Folks,

Myself, a buddy and his son would like to give a full "thru-bike" of the KT, starting from West to East in summer months of 2019. We're hoping to rely mainly on camping opportunities, free camping if we can help it. We'd like to get in about 50-60 miles a day and I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this before? It seems like after N. Jefferson, camping becomes vary scarce. I've considered Daniel Boone CA as a waypoint in the middle of it all for camping opportunities but welcome you suggestions? I'm a southern Illinoisan excited about giving this awesome MO rail trail a try :) -Shawn

John Hutchins from Pacific on 10/09/2018 05:33 AM
Camping gets a little thinner east of Jeff City, but there are good options. The Turner Shelter in Tebbits, Herman MO city park, Marthasville city park and Klondike Park. I'm not aware of any camping available east of Klondike, though.

Bruce from Pittsburg, ks on 10/09/2018 10:16 PM
The Missouri Dept of Conservation conducts organized rides from Clinton to St. Charles. If fact, they have a ride in progress right now; they are in Booneville tonight. The are fully supported where they haul your gear, provide hot showers, tents for rent, and even bikes for those who fly in. I think they have one in early summer or late spring, too, but maybe someone on this forum could answer that. You couldnt pay someone to shuttle all your camping gear and be at each night's destination cheaper than what the MDC charges. If you have any flexibility in you schedule, its an option you may want to consider.

We camped(mostly) west to east and spent roughly 7-12 pp each night. Pleasant hill caretaker never came to collect payment. Pilot Grove is free. Hermann was nice with brewery in town. Use the trip planner to map out the campsites and figure your mileage from that. Nothing east of Klondike (reservation needed).

Jerry Whittle from Belleville Illinois on 10/10/2018 09:24 AM
Here's what Bruce is talking about that happens in June. This is the 2017 ride, but should be very similar in 2019.

I've done it the last 8 years and really enjoy it.

My sister and I stayed at the Doll House during a recent trip on the Katy. Melissa was super nice and offers rides into Hermann for anyone interested. We had heard from someone who stayed years ago that there were dolls in the decor. This is not true today. The place is decorated nicely, very comfortable, and clean. Breakfast was awesome! We would definitely recommend staying at the Doll House.

Several things.

First, if you are riding self contained (carrying 50# or more of gear) please realize that to get to this park you have to climb one of two very steep paths. The west one is paved and the east one is gravel. Very STEEP, but relatively short. Hard climb after biking 30-50 miles. I’m sure most people walk it.

Second, reserve a site. We were there on a Friday and the place was FULL! I had called two months before and reserved site #24.

Third, do NOT reserve sites 24-28 unless you want to climb an even bigger and longer hill to a campsite with a great view, but no water or showers; just one pit toliet. I’d recommend sites 30-38 as they are close to the shower house (unless you want a quiet out of the way spot, and then I’d recommend sites 11-16).

Lastly, if you do get one of the spots up on the hill (24-28), there was no sign at all saying sites 24-28 this way (like all the rest of the sites), just a sign saying overlook and picnicing.

It’s a beautiful park with great showers and a group kitchen room on one end of the shower house. I’d stay there again, but would get a different site.

Is there a bike route from Olathe, KS to Pleasant Hill that largely avoids roads with high traffic and also has a shoulder or bike lane?

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 10/08/2018 09:55 AM
The Indian Creek Trail will take you about 26 miles towards your destination but I think it will be roads the rest of the way from the end of the trail.

Allen from Shawnee, Ks on 10/08/2018 10:28 AM
There is a bike path along 150 hiway after you get east of State Line about a mile, it is seperated from the hiway, there is a shoulder on the road up to there. The bike path runs I think to Smart rd, then go south to PH , there isn’t any shoulders after leaving 150 except there may be a bike path along Smart rd for a ways. If you are used to riding roads this is probably doable, if you arent comfortable around traffic it would be best to to find another way. If you come up with another solution please post it as this question comes up now and then.

Allen

Allen from Shawnee,Ks on 10/08/2018 10:36 AM
Scratch above conversation I remembered it wrong, bike path ends at Ward rd.
Then it would be all two lane south from there. Sorry

$12 per tent. Not $10 per couple. We had two small tents and paid $24. Could have brought a slightly larger tent and paid only $12!

Park at the Depot. The building doesn’t have to be open to use the parking lot.

Parking: (1) 2nd & Osage 2 blocks from the Amtrak station & across the street from the police station, or (2) Katy Trail State Park Trailhead in the DNR parking lot on the east side of the Katy Depot, that is 6-7 blocks away & is next to the Katy trail. The first is convenient if you are taking Amtrak bac to Sedelia.

We stayed at Victoria's Place (formerly Cliff Manor Bed & Breakfast) for a night during our full Katy Trip. (Trip was Aug 17-22)- The manor itself is lovely and Victoria was a fantastic host. There was a lockable shed for bike storage overnight. She had snacks, soda and water all available to us during our stay. It was a little bit rainy that night, but we walked a few blocks for dinner and then Ubered back to the B&B. The breakfast of beignets, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs was a perfect way to start out the next day of riding. The view of the Missouri River and JC Bridge from the back of this home cannot be beat. I highly recommend this B&B if you plan to stay overnight in Jeff City.

Anonymous from Texas on 10/05/2018 06:55 PM
Yup, we took the pedestrian bridge over to N. Jefferson City from the N. Jefferson trailhead. This B&B is maybe 50 yards from where the trail spur ends in N. Jefferson; just after crossing the river. We walked maybe a 1/2 block to the Irish pub and had a great dinner. Stayed at B&Bs along the trail, except for the hotel in Sedalia, and all of them were great.

We stopped here for lunch during our full Katy Trail Trip on day 2; Sedalia - Rocheport. (Trip was Aug. 17-22, 2018). It's right across the street from the trailhead. Very easy to find. The waitress was incredibly friendly and they appear to be used to the Katy traffic. (and they are not angry about it) Smoking is still allowed in this place BUT they have a giant smokeater machine so it didn't actually smell smoky if that makes sense. The trip from Sedalia was a bit uphill and the trail levels off right after this stop. Pretty typical bar food but it was exactly what we wanted that day. Beers were cold and water glasses were giant.

Dave from Kirkwood on 09/03/2018 12:34 PM
The short, easy answers to your questions are:
Fine, No, Yes

The trail drains well, so it should be in good shape, even with the spotty thunderstorms predicted in the coming week.

There have been many discussions about bike types and tire sizes that you can check on this site (use the search on the homepage), but you should be fine with touring bikes.

Have a great trip.

Allen from Shawnee on 09/03/2018 01:52 PM
I have ridden the trail many times on a touring bicycle with 700X35 tires, never had a problem even in very wet times.
Have a good trip.
Allen

Hands down ... the most common bikes I saw on the trail were city/gravel/touring bikes. I just ran it with 38x700 and my wife rode on 32x700. I saw maybe 3-4 mtbs and the same number of recumbants. It rained a few nights and by 9am the trail was dry and dusty by 11am.

Based on this website and personal memory, there are no bathrooms at the Research Park parking area. Heading west, there is one at the Weldon Spring trailhead (with parking). Next, Defiance has restrooms at the bike shop and restaurants (parking as well). The Matson trailhead has both restrooms and parking. The boat ramp area before you reach Klondike also has both. One final option (before Augusta) is to bike/walk up the hill (using paved path) to Klondike Park, which has restrooms next to the camping area.

Hope that helps.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of the Katy trail map. It will list all available accomodations ( water, restrooms, camping, etc ) at each trailhead.

My husband and I were disappointed in the western end of the trail which ended in Clinton. We were looking forward to seeing the western end, expecting something remarkable that celebrated this wonderful trail's western end point. There was the typical train stat6 mi)ion / Katy Trail informational signs which were nice, but the bathroom was dirty, and you could not drink from the water fountain which was filthy. I had expected to fill up my water bottles here, but didn't; returned to Windsor (16 mi) by bike with only 4 ounces of water :( The trail came to an unceremonious end a little bit past the train area,

OOps, sorry for the typos in my previous post; don't know how to correct that which has been posted....

WHAT? You mean they no longer have the marching band and confetti cannons to great you at the end? I guess it became too cost prohibitive to continue the operation. Also a shame they don’t have any restaurants in town anymore. What’s the world coming to?

We started our trip in Clinton and spent 2 nights there prepping. It's a very short, flat ride on side streets from the nice (but quiet) historic downtown. The Henry County Museum was worth visiting. There are plenty of places to eat and buy supplies in the (not as quaint) business area that is also nearby and easy to get to. We enjoyed the ride to Sedalia and were very glad we didn't skip this part of the trail.

Well...if we would have known you were coming, we would have baked a cake.

Good thing you all didn't go to Machens. :)

I'm just thankful that bathrooms and water fountains exist.

Here is a tip to be prepared for less than surgical cleanliness on bike trips. Take a few wet wipes and fold them into a small size and stick them in a heavy duty ziploc bag. Squeeze the air out of the bag and seal. Stick the packet you've created in your bike bag.

You now have a way to clean a toilet seat or water fountain when you come across one. A couple of wet wipes take up just about zero space, weigh virtually nothing, and come in handy on occasion.

Good idea. Or just buy a 20 pack of antibacterial Wet Ones and put it in your bike bag.

Just finished the trail last week. Rode it from St Charles to Clinton. My feeling is that the Katy trail is a state park and most state parks are short on funds. I actually heard that there was an option to end the trail in the square in Clinton but it got shot down because of cost. Dunno.. I think the trail brings business and the square can use the business. If you want to see how nicely a trial can be then go visit the GAP and see how Cumberland and Pittsburg welcome their rails 2 trails riders and hikers. However, the trailheads on the GAP are no where near as nice as the Katy. Had a super time. Appreciate what you find on the trail ... great people and wonderful towns. Wonderful time!

Tomorrow (Friday) I’ll be riding East from Clinton into Sedalia. With the relatively more recent “detour” route that’s been posted about, what’s the most efficient and less vehicle-trafficked way into Sedalia where hotels are located? I’ll have a small terrier in a rear rack basket; although the dog is secured, I try not to ride too close to cars. Speaking of pets, can anyone recommend any pet-friendly hotels or B&Bs in Sedalia that are easy to ride to from the trail with this in mind?
Thank you for any help!

If you are eastbound into Sedalia, then there is no detour to concern you. The detour route is for those who travel eastbound from Sedalia. It is a non-issue; it is well marked, and traffic is light. We love staying at the Bothwell, and we ride the short distance to the square from the depot on 5th Street. Traffic is very light, but when traveling on public roadways, I always use a very visible headlamp and tail lamp.

Hi! I am a local photographer and have 3 family and two engagement sessions I have planned to be taken by the Katy Trail between St. Charles and Weldon Springs this Saturday/Sunday. But it looks like it may rain all weekend. Do you know of any beautiful covered natural or man-made (bridges preferably) close to the area as a backup plan? Fall family portraits - ideally my families would love some of the change of color in their photos. I would love to hear any suggestions you may have in case it rains. Thank you so much!

I apologize to anyone who was trying to reach BikeKatyTrail.com between last night and this morning.

I had to switch to a new web server on very short notice, which took a while to get set up and stabilized.

It's all pretty much back to normal now, although you may see an occasional missing image. If you subscribe to the Forum Alert emails, it may take a day or two for those emails to get back up and running (but the forum itself is working fine).

If you come across anything else that's not working right, please feel free to drop me a note at contact @ bikekatytrail.com

Again, sorry for the inconvenience, thanks for your patience, and happy trails.

Fantastic! I thought we'd been hit with a virus!

Thank you Ray. This website is a very valuable tool. I don't know how many people I've referred this site too over the years. I've wished many times as we prepare for a trip that our destination had such a site to refer to.

For all that you've done, and all that you do for the biking community....Thank You!
