We're riding the trail from Clinton to St. Charles in 3 weeks. We're in our 60's, riding hybrids and staying in hotels. We've ridden most of the trail, but in chunks, over the last several years. Still trying to decide if we should do it in 6 or 7 days. We're doing 30+ mile rides on the weekends and shorter rides during the week to prepare. Would appreciate any thoughts on this matter. Thank you in advance.

If you do it in 7 days you'll have more opportunities to "stop and smell the roses." If you are able to spend 7 days crossing Missouri on the Katy, I say do it. Biking 30 miles/day and taking 7 days will give you opportunities to enjoy the Katy Trail's uniqueness, the small towns along the trail, the places you stay at, and meet and visit with other bikers. I used to live in Jefferson City and loved biking the Katy Trail. There's so much to absorb. Have a great time!

It would be nice to do it in 7 days, because that would leave you more time and energy for "side quests" like
riding a bit of the Rock Island Trail out and back
ride into Sedalia instead of just going past on the trail
side trip to Jefferson City
side trip to Columbia
side trip to Hermann
taking time to have a little rest in every little bar/cafe/restaurant/Casey's along the way.
etc
etc

So many of the locals and the other riders are really great people, so it's nice to take time to chat.

We're in our 60's and this June will be our fourth year in a row riding. We typically do a Clinton drop off and ride to Sedalia, then ride the next day to either Boonville or Rocheport. Day three is Jeff City and four is Hermann. Day five is always a chore because Defiance has been changing and we haven't liked the options. This year, we're riding to Chesterfield. Day six is Machens and back to the truck in St. Charles.

It's all hotels and B&B's for us. Admittedly, we're not the side quest type of people and the ride is more about time together conquering a challenge. For us, the fun is dinners in different places in the evening, walks in the morning and evening and just getting away from the rat race. (There may be a cigar around a fire in there too)

So, six days is certainly doable, but there's not a lot of time for siteseeing. A seven day trip would offer that. Whatever you choose, enjoy!
