ArkyKenny on 06/02/2013 08:42 AM
The distance is not a problem, but linking up with the Amtrak ride and being on their schedule could be tricky. If you are worried about it, think about an out and back from Sedalia, eating lunch in Huntsdale, Rocheport, or some place like that. These long summer days allow for that, and I would much rather ride some extra miles than wait on a train.
FYI, Sedalia to Pilot Grove is my favorite part of the trail (because of the tree tunnels), but you climb to get to PG from both directions. Railroad grades wear on you very differently than those Arkansas hills. Not bad, just different. So be ready, and bring plenty of fluids because you will climb to PG twice if you do that.
Mark from Bentonville, AR on 06/03/2013 05:14 PM
There is an evening train scheduled to depart at ~6:30 pm. Is it that the trains often run behind schedule? I like your out and back idea but was also wanting to see as much of the trail in one day as possible
ArkyKenny on 06/03/2013 08:06 PM
My out and back suggestion is a reflection of my 1) my need to be early vs. 2) my utter disgust with having to wait. Since I have to be early, and hate to wait, and like to ride, the best solution for me is to do an out and back for a one day ride.
If it's your first time on the Katy, an out and back would also be a good option for you to figure out your preferred distance. I think that 80 on Katy is roughly equal to riding a century on the road, so that is what I consider a good full long, but fairly leisure day's ride. You will need to figure out your ideal day: The rolling resistance is more than I first expected, and there are NO hills to coast down, so there are no breaks. The Katy is both easier, and harder to ride than riding on the road. An out and back would be a good way to figure that out.
If you want to see the trail, which you will, get a ride to St Charles (maybe on Amtrak), and do a multi day trip back to Sedalia, or Clinton. That is how I did it. And I'm hooked!
Good luck!
Hank on 06/04/2013 05:04 AM
If you're an experienced fit cyclist then Sedalia to Jeff in one day should not be a problem. Just leave plenty early so you are not "on the clock" so to speak. Amtrak is often late though better than it used to be, when it was ALWAYS late. Don't forget with Amtrak, you MUST have a bike reservation, you can't just show up and put your bikes on. I agree with AK, Sedalia to Pilot Grove is sublime.
Mike from South of Clinton on 06/04/2013 07:48 PM
I have made the Sedalia - Jefferson City - Amtrak trip several times. That is close to a 90 mile day, I like the challenge. If things don't work out, you can stay the night and catch the morning train, or, just ride back...75 - 80 miles from your car can be a real problem if you break your bike or yourself. I still take time to stop and eat, talk to people, drink beer, etc. I have shown up with 5 minutes to spare before. I have had nothing but good experiences with Amtrak, even calling and changing my travel times the night before.

Dean from Columbia on 05/16/2019 05:02 PM
Only reservation I might have are detours near Easley (3 miles on gravel roads) and Rocheport (4 mile detour, most of it on US 40). The Easley detour is rough, and slowed me down a bit last I took it. The section on 40 can be a little busy depending on time of day.
Karl Brand from Missouri City, TX on 05/17/2019 05:53 AM
I have ridden the entire trail 9 times, and the mileage and AMTK connection are very doable. I have to echo the sentiment; the Sedalia-Pilot Grove segment is my favorite.

Here in hartsburg they have symbol stating that there is a restaurant where you can eat or get stuff from. But it's only open 4 days a week. And the only place really to get any food from it's the bar right down the street from volunteer Park. But the only thing they have there is an overcooked high price Pizza. The townspeople well let their kids say just about anything. As of me and my husband was walking back to our tent from getting us a pizza one little girl stated why are they coming this way. And a campsite we're staying at at the volunteer Park it's one BBQ pit playground kazeebo and a house. Even though the restroom is real convenient.
If you stop at hartsburg trailhead make sure you have plenty of food cuz nothing will be open until after 3:30 in the afternoon.

Kind of fun that they have a bbq pit for a campfire and a gazebo you can sit under if it rains.

Based on what I saw in the trail advisories, the trail is closed from MM 115.9 to MM 121.4. In addition, the State's website advises there is a bridge out at MM 97 (just west of Case). No published detours for either of these. Can anyone make a recommendation? Looking to start our ride tomorrow afternoon. Would, and may, postpone with all the weather but its too late to rebook accommodations at this time without forfeiting payment.
Thank you
Bill in Houston from Houston on 05/09/2019 01:40 PM
Here's what I would do. Might be completely inappropriate for you. Evaluate your own ability and risk tolerance. Etc etc.
West of Case - use Google Maps satellite view. You can see where the bridge is probably out, and you can see an obvious ridearound.
https://goo.gl/maps/QZZiRNrQAngziDCr7
If the outage isn't there, I guess you're on 94 for a bit. Lots of flashing lights and orange vests for you and your crew so you can make sure that you are seen.
Steedman to Portland - Ride the Katy until you get to the actual outage. Backtrack a little until you get to a back road that you can take to 94. Ride 94 for as short a distance as possible, and then cut back to the trail on another back road. If I am reading the flood gauges right, that section isn't actually flooded. They just don't want people falling into a washout or getting caught in suddenly rising waters.
https://mostateparks.com/page/58843/potential-flood-locations
Any of the above could be a death trap. Evaluate on your own, and if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.
Anthony Ippolito Jr. from PT PLEASANT BEACH on 05/09/2019 02:11 PM
Yes I called the parks dept and they were a little cryptic on what closed with no detour means. I plan to start a westbound ride Tuesday the 13th and would like more info also.
Gary from Near Tebbetts on 05/09/2019 03:26 PM
Basically “closed with no detour” means the trail is not considered safe to ride through and any alternate detour is not considered safe for trail riders to use (do to liability issues). There may be a route around the section of trail but it may include rough gravel roads or black top county roads with no shoulders. Several of the black top roads only have room for two cars and if you occupy the same part as the two cars on a blind hill you should be repaired to jump into the ditch. Thus you accept the liability for choosing the path, not the DNR.
Gman from Erie PA on 05/10/2019 05:37 PM
Did the Steedman to Portland detour yesterday and the mm 97 today. Both are very easy short detours.
Jamie from Edwardsville, IL on 05/13/2019 09:17 AM
The "closed with no detour" at around 117 is a huge rock slide. Climbing over this would be seriously dangerous. They are going to have to wait for things to dry out to get in the huge equipment it will take to clear this. It may be weeks.

I've been planning a bike tour thru the area and wanted to know if there was a place to eat in Green Ridge. The last time I passed thru there in 2004, Burf's was closed; and the only option was Casey's.
My usual method is to locate the area I'm interested in on Google Maps and "search nearby" for, in this case, restaurants. The only option was Casey's. My next step was scan the area using "street view". All I could see was the permanently closed Burf's. Then I remembered bikekatytrail.com from my last Katy ride way back in 2016 where I found the Parkside Cafe. Duckduckgo-ing "Parkside Cafe" yielded a link to Facebook (which I normally have no use for).
The Facebook page had a picture of the cafe which was identical to one I spotted with Google map's street view. The only problem was the sign on the front of the building in the latter picture said "Green Ridge Laundromat - $0.25 dryers". Further searching showed the cafe opened in 2016. Moral of the story Google Maps are not always your friend.

Hi Joseph,
My wife and I live on the Katy almost exactly between Pilot Grove and Boonville (we are the ones with the vintage bikes out along the trail with flowers right now).
Any chance you have "Find My iPhone" turned on? It will leave a breadcrumb location with your Apple account. You could go sign in to that Apple account and find the last known location. Worth trying even if you don't think it is tracking it.
Happy to go look for it, but I don't have time to walk it both directions today and unless I have a general location I'm afraid tomorrow's rain will find it first! My first guess is one of the road crossings between us and Pilot Grove. They are pretty rough!

I just rode from Pleasant Hill to St Charles. Pleasant Hill to Windsor had some soft spots but it was still ok. The rest of the trail was hard packed, with a few bumpy spots only 10-20 ft long. No mud at all. All in all, it's great.

Anon thanks for your recent reports. Heading out May 17 and been nervous about trail conditions but you put our minds at ease! Glad to know the detours are minimal and the trail is in good shape despite the harsh weather of late

This subject appears every year. Basically, spring time is a period of flooding conditions that every rider needs to check current conditions as posted by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), recent whether conditions (rain) for the week before your ride along the trail and north west of Kansas City to give you an idea of what to expect. If there is flood stage conditions along the Missouri River and heavy rains forecast in central Missouri and/or Northwest of Kansas City then you are likely to experience problems. If you don’t like problems, delay you trip until after June with fall being a better option.

I second all these nice comments about Kim's Cabins. Great plane to stay. Kim is so kind and welcoming, and the cabins are perfect after a day of riding - comfortable, clean, and charming. I had to tear myself away the next morning!
