August 2019 - we rode from Sedalia to Calhoun and returned to Sedalia. The ride was WONDERFUL!! Mostly shaded, and the high was around 85. The trail was in great shape!! Windsor is a neat little town with a variety of places to eat. Missouri, thank you for this wonderful trail and for all the work your employees do to keep the trail in top condition!! We have travelled from Oklahoma to ride the Katy at least 10 times. Also, thank you Hotel Bothwell - what a grand old hotel!

August 2019 - We stayed 2 nights at Joey's Bird House. Joey was great, and the Bird House is right on the trail! We rode 17 miles west - the trail was closed so we rode back to McKittrick and rode 25 miles east. The trail is in great shape!!! One small spot was closed going east, and with a short detour mostly on asphalt roads, we were back on the trail. We have been riding the trail for about 20 years, and it is in great shape!! Thank you Missouri for this gem!! We ate ate Philly's Pizza at Marthasville - it was absolutely delicious!!

After many months of planning an end to end ride in mid-June we decided to cancel because of approx. 100 miles of the trail being closed. My question is did anybody else have reservations at The Katy trail B&B in Rocheport and cancel and are still waiting for a refund? I received all my other refunds within 3 days and i'm still waiting for this buisness since June 4th. One E-mail and three phone calls and no reply from this B&B. Any info would be great. Thanks

Doug from Bluffton on 06/25/2019 06:56 AM
I understand your concern but please try to be patient. The flood has been devastating to businesses along the trail and Rocheport was hit particularly hard. They might still be making repairs or even unable to access their property to evaluate the damage and/or their records.

Bill in Houston from Houston on 06/25/2019 08:17 AM

Buck from N.H. on 06/25/2019 08:21 AM
Hello Doug, I fully understand the situation out there, in fact i had reservations with you and cancelled and received a check back from you within 5 days.[thanks] But to not even get an e-mail or a return phone call back from this B&B is not acceptable. I'm trying to be patient but it has now been 15 business days since i cancelled and would have thought by now i would have seen a refund. Thanks

Rocheport Resident from Rocheport on 06/25/2019 12:10 PM
Meriwether is high and dry. In fact, all of Rocheport was spared thanks to wonderful volunteers and sandbagging. Katy Trail B&B did not have water damage. All of the flooding was on the other side of the trail. Rocheport is completely open for business!

Marna from Boonville on 06/25/2019 02:02 PM
Could your deposit have been 'non refundable'? Many times they are.

Buck from N.H. on 06/25/2019 05:20 PM
We gave a 14 day notice and were told it would be a $15.00 cancellation fee which was fine with me but i'm still waiting for my balance of $199.96. That was on June4th. I know it takes about 3-5 business days for it to show up but it has now been 16 business days. This place will not answer my e-mails or return my phone calls. Not a good way to run a business.

Bill in Houston from Houston on 06/26/2019 09:32 AM
Oh, good news, Rocheport Resident! Thanks!

Buck from N.H. on 06/27/2019 03:00 PM
I finally heard back from The Katy trail B&B and said they were working on cancellation refunds. Thank you to them for at least getting back to me.

Hi Lisa
We plan a six day ride on exactly the same route as you, in late September this year.
We are just waiting to see what the conditions will be. I have a plan B (rearranging accommodation etc) but haven't actioned it yet - getting close to doing so. It involves riding west from Boonville and then out on the Rock Island Trail and back.
We don't mind short detours on back roads but after some steep hills and main highways on the Erie Canal Trail last year, we aren't into long ones.
Ray, the webmaster, has posted latest conditions.

Good luck; I'll be interested to learn what you decide to do

Michael

The Katy trail from Boonville going west was not damaged by the flooding from the missouri river. Been told and seen a lot of the bikers going west. But it was water damage going east on the trail at the time 100 miles was under water.

biker dudette from Wentzville on 08/03/2019 05:44 AM
The Katy answered me on their FB page. Sounds like the entire bridge at Rocheport has to be replaced, and before that happens the levees need to be fixed. So I am not very hopeful for a Fall trip. Who knows how long all this will take. I am going to drive out there in the next 2 wks and see what the detour is like, sounds like 60mph and no shoulder. Not good. I'll report back then.

Sharonbikes from Kansas City on 08/04/2019 11:55 AM
No - I was there on Saturday - there is an orange fence blocking the tunnel. The detour is to ride for a bit on 40 highway - after the hill going down from Rocheport - it is pretty flat but traffic is fast and there isn't much shoulder. The speed limit is 60, but people tend to go faster. The bike shop in Rocheport was open on Saturday - and I am guessing that they could help find people to shuttle you around the detour.

We went to help with the Katy clean up on Saturday. We were surprised the clean up was mostly of debris from the tornado that hit Jeff City about a month ago. Lots and lots of foam roofing insulation - it was everywhere. They are looking for volunteers for a couple more clean up dates. We did a little bike riding while we there - the parts of the Trail that are open are in remarkably good shape - and most of it is open. Go ride some and help clean up some - make it a weekend!

Three of us Katy Riders stayed at Eber Haus Inn in early May 2019 for one night. Sarah had left the door open for us, and we arrived to park our bikes in the rear and enjoy cold drinks and snacks in the kitchen. Sarah was in touch with us to take our breakfast order, timing, and so on. 35th on Main provided a fine, delicious dinner, just up the street.
The inn in May was a clean, comfortable, first-floor bunk house. One large room held about four twin beds, and an adjoining room held a queen. One central bathroom was shared by all of us. There was gas heat and plenty of hot water, towels, and bedding.
We all slept well and had a hearty omelet breakfast the next morning.
I recommend Eber Haus for a clean, homey, and comfortable stay. Nothing too fancy, but it's just right for staying right on the trail with friendly hosts and a welcoming town.

My boys eat a lot of cheeseburgers and they both said they were among the best they've had! The chicken sandwich was tasty and so were the fries and tots. Didn't have room for dessert but they did offer to fill our water bottles with ice water! Nice touch!

I am planning on riding the Katy trail from Clinton to St. Charles. There are a couple of charters that offer sag assistance but only in the spring and fall. I am only off during the summer months. Consequently, my friend and I are trying to figure out how to do this on our own. We cannot carry too much with us and were wondering if there are independent services that would take the "stuff" to the next town so we do not have to.
We have done RAGBRAI twice so understand what we need to take etc.
Thank you

Kim on 07/29/2019 12:06 PM
Noble Inventions does luggage service.

Doug from Bluffton on 07/29/2019 03:00 PM
I had a lady stay here one summer carrying only a handlebar bag. Besides her patch kit etc. she had a rain jacket and sleeveless night dress. Upon arrival she showered and washed her bike clothes and put on her dress, The next day her bike clothes were clean and dry and away she went. She thought the rain jacket was "A lot of extra bulk" but did not want to ride without it. Wouldn't work for camping but for Inn to Inn...… Most B&Bs can do some laundry for you if you want a change of clothing with you. Might charge a few dollars but WAY cheaper than shuttling gear.

Bill in Houston from Houston on 07/30/2019 11:03 AM
Doug makes a great point. You could buy a rack and bags for less than luggage shuttle service. Much much less. And you really don't need too much variety of clothing. Something to wear for a few hours at night in town, and then whatever you wear to ride every day. You can wash the riding clothes in the sink or shower every night.

Sharonbikes from Kansas City on 07/30/2019 08:50 PM
Doug - I met that lady on the Trail- she was interesting. I also met folks one weekend who were doing something similar who were staying at hotels and B & B's - they had all they needed in trunk bags and one guy had small panniers. Toothbrush, change of clothes to wear while you wash your bike clothes, extra tubes, snacks and some money and. you can be good to go.

Sharon

Kathleen from Oolitic, IN on 08/01/2019 08:34 AM
My dad and I rode end to end summer 2018. I hauled panniers on my bike for both of us. I got 1 he got the other! It wasn't difficult to pack for a week in one bag. Save the expense of shuttling your bags and haul them yourself :)

Allen from Shawnee on 08/01/2019 08:39 AM
If you are going to stay at B&B and motels then most people use 2 panniers on a rack on rear of bike, with clothes, toiletries and snacks in them . If you are planning on camping and want someone to carry your gear from place to place like Raigbra and other rides like this, that will probably present a real problem for you. Riding an unsupported tour is a totally different deal from organized paid rides.
Good luck with whatever you do and have a great trip.

Allen

Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Katy Trail by picking up trash left by receding floodwaters. Anyone interested in helping with this effort is encouraged to grab their bicycles, boots, gloves, long sleeves and bug spray and stop by from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

The park will provide plenty of trash bags for any person or group. When a bag is full, or an object is too big to put in a bag, leave it on the shoulder of the trail, and park staff will pick up the full bags.

Volunteers should meet at the Katy Trail North Jefferson trailhead. Park staff will be on hand to give directions and supply trash bags. RSVP by calling the park office at 573-449-7400.
